Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) is a commissioning source for Georgetown students to become officers within the Navy or Marine Corps (Active Duty and Reserve Force). Students conduct their training with the Capital Battalion at our consortium partner, George Washington University. Training consists of classroom instruction, physical training, and field training during selected weekends at regional military installations.

In addition to academic and on-campus military training, students will attend New Student Indoctrination at Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois during the summer as well as the opportunity to participate in a variety of training such as the opportunity to shadow an active duty Ensign or Second Lieutenant in the fleet.

Naval ROTC requires four years of participation. To complete NROTC, a student is required to have four years in the program on campus, meaning that students must either win the national scholarship while applying as a high school senior or receive a scholarship as a “walk on” during their freshman year. Students are not permitted to join the program after their sophomore year and are not permitted to remain in Naval ROTC beyond their sophomore year unless they win a scholarship.

To apply for Naval ROTC, the minimum standardized test scores to apply are an SAT Verbal score of 550 and a Math score of 540, and a combined minimum score of 1200. For the ACT, the minimum scores to apply are Math: 21, Verbal 22, and a combined score of 47. If you do not meet minimum standards, but are in the top 10% of your high school class your application will be considered. To apply, Naval ROTC applicants are required to pass the Physical Fitness Assessment examination (one minute of push-ups, one minute of sit-ups and a one-mile run).

Naval ROTC has a three-tiered system of “preferred majors”, with STEM majors being most preferred for Navy Midshipmen. For Marine option Midshipmen there are no preferred majors, but high physical fitness scores are essential for a competitive packet. All NROTC midshipmen must complete coursework that includes physics and calculus. More details about academic requirements can be found at the Capital Battalion’s website.

Midshipmen may be eligible to receive uniforms, a monthly stipend, and scholarship covering tuition and fees. Prospective midshipmen are encouraged to apply here.
