The Military and Veterans’ Resource Center (MAVRC) offers employment opportunities for students to assist the MAVRC in supporting Georgetown’s military-connected students. Students who work in the MAVRC will have the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of the issues facing military-connected students as they navigate higher education.

All MAVRC student workers will fulfill the base responsibilities of the office coordinator role, including answering emails and phone calls, speaking to walk-ins, and offering advising meetings for prospective students. More specific roles, such as those on the communications, ROTC support, and events teams, will be assigned as they fit the student’s interests and the MAVRC’s needs. Additionally, every staff member will have the opportunity to develop software skills, receive one-on-one mentorship, and have first-hand access to development opportunities secured through the MAVRC.

There are four major ways to work in the center:

  1. VA Work-Study
  2. Georgetown-funded positions
  3. DoD SkillBridge Program
  4. Capstones and program-required internships

Regardless of position type, work hours will generally coincide with the Military and Veterans’ Resource Center’s hours of operation from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. but will be flexible to accommodate the student’s class and office hours schedule. The Director will strive to accommodate hybrid work models as appropriate and will work to align students’ job duties with their professional interests where possible.

Note: The MAVRC is currently not hiring VA work-study students, but interested applicants are encouraged to send their resumes to veteranservices@georgetown.edu to be kept in mind for future openings. Available positions will also be advertised through our newsletter. While our office is not hiring, a list of other approved work sites in DC and Maryland are available here.

The Work-Study Allowance Program offers an additional non-taxable allowance to students in return for performing VA-related activities. It serves as a supplemental VA education benefit and often provides the additional funding that allows a student to pursue and accomplish educational goals (the earnings received under VA work-study are not considered income and should not be mentioned as such). Work-Study students earn an hourly wage equal to the federal minimum or the state minimum wage, whichever is greater, and students typically work up to 25 hours per week.

To qualify, a student must be enrolled in and pursuing an approved college degree, vocational or professional program of education at a rate of 3/4 time or greater and be receiving benefits under one of the following education programs:

  • Chapter 30: The Montgomery GI Bill
  • Chapter 31: Vocational Rehabilitation
  • Chapter 32: The Post-Vietnam Era Veterans’ Educational Assistance Program
  • Chapter 33: Post 9/11 GI Bill (Including Fry and Edith Rogers STEM Scholarships)
  • Chapter 35: Dependent’s Educational Assistance Program
  • Chapter 1606: The Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserve

GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). More information about education benefits offered by VA is available at the official U.S. government Web site at https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill (new window).

Note: The MAVRC is currently not hiring for Georgetown-funded positions, but interested applicants are encouraged to send their resumes to veteranservices@georgetown.edu to be kept in mind for future openings. Available positions will also be advertised through our newsletter.

The MAVRC maintains a personnel budget to employ Georgetown students to assist the MAVRC in supporting military-connected students. Any student can fill a Georgetown-funded position, and the MAVRC usually employs 1-2 GU-funded students per semester.

The DoD SkillBridge Program offers active-duty service members the opportunity to gain valuable civilian work experience through internships, fellowships, and apprenticeships during their final 180 days of military service. At MAVRC, we participate in SkillBridge as a host site, offering internships designed to develop veteran-facing program management, communications, data analysis, and operational skills within a higher education setting.

If you are interested in the working in the MAVRC as a SkillBridge intern, please contact our office at veteranservices@georgetown.edu.

Several Georgetown graduate programs have capstone or internship requirements. Depending on the program, Georgetown students may be able to work in the MAVRC to meet their program’s requirements. In these instances, the MAVRC Director works with the student and program staff if necessary to create a position that is mutually beneficial for the student and the center.

If you are interested in the working in the MAVRC to meet a programs internship or capstone requirement, please contact our office at veteranservices@georgetown.edu.
