Introducing Georgetown University's Military Awareness Month

Throughout the month of November, Georgetown University offices and organizations are collaborating to highlight and raise awareness around the military-connected community.
U.S. and foreign military members, families, and allies are welcome to these events.

Requests for accommodations should be directed to LeNaya Hezel.  A good faith effort will be made to accommodate requests.

This November, in honor of Military Awareness Month, the Office of Global Services and the Veterans Office will host a panel discussion for international students who have served in their home country’s military to share their experiences.

Georgetown Athletics Football Military Appreciation Game

Georgetown Univeristy Football game versus College of the Holy Cross is designated as the season's Military Appreciation Game. To honor the military-connected community, admission for the game is free to all service members and veterans and their families. Service members and veterans can access tickets the day of the game at Cooper Field and provide a military ID for free admission for themselves and their families. All other Information on ordering tickets can be found here.

Campus Ministry Chaplain's Tea with the Veterans Office

WAR VIRGIN BOOK TALK AND SIGNING

GUSVA and Think Broader host Laura Westley's War Virgin. Laura Westley is a West Point graduate, former Army Captain, and Iraq War Veteran. War Virgin is her memoir that describes her journey or repression, temptation, and liberation. Ms. Westley is also a veteran mental health advocate and writes several personal op-eds that cover the topics associated with book, including sexuality,politics, gender, discrimination, sexual harassment and assault, and her own mental health stuggles. 

Transgender Battlefield

After the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, transgender individuals in the military still face the same challenges at work that have always loomed. Brought to you by the LGBTQ Resource Center, Shane McCammon, who studies issues affecting trans members of the US military, and Paula Neira, a nurse, attorney, and veteran, will explore issues in the military with LeNaya Hezel, director of the Veterans Office, as moderator. 

Almost Sunrises Movie Screening

GUSVAVeterans' Voices, Georgetown University's Office of Campus Ministry, The Veterans Office, and CAPS are  hosting the film screening, Almost Sunrises that follows former soldiers Tom Voss and Anthony Anderson, haunted by their own combat experiences, take a 2,700-mile trek on foot across America seeking redemption, acceptance and a way to close the moral chasm opened by war.

Mental Health in the Veteran Community
